Hudson’s Hamburgers Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I love history and it definitely repeats itself. This place has been serving up delicious burgers since 1907 and as of 4/7/2015, they are continuing to repeat. This place stays true to its promise and interesting code and you get exactly what they say you'll get. Get the double cheese "with all the trimmings" and you'll love every juicy minute of it.

To me there was nothing special about the burgers you get a single or double with or without cheese they don't season the meat and only offer onions and pickles. I'm fine with unseasoned meat but it didn't taste any better than others that are cooked on a flat grill. No fries or other sides that I could see and the staff was not all that friendly. Very small and only take cash. They do offer a atm that they charge you 2.50 to use plus whatever your bank charges you. Highly doubtful we will ever return.

Everyone including customers are nice and patient. Even while waiting, strangers socialize. Friendly ambiance, like a real community brought together by family values and great, simple food. Once you're done with a burger, they ask if you want another one. Yay or nay, you eventually pay and leave, and someone takes your seat, usually with a smile, and a thank you. Food is made in front of you and if the grillmaster isn't too busy, he'll mingle with the customers. I love their burgers. Sooooo good. Sauce too. Yum.

Great simple burgers but small. Order a double or triple or 2 if hungry. Only option is pickles, onions, and choice of sauce. I had the recommended secret sauce and spicy mustard. Burgers and pies is all they serve. Don't expect fries. Small place too with only a counter to eat. We got it to go and ate on lawn by lake. Service was fast.

  • Marina D.

I love every single bite of it! And, I can eat it all the time! I also loved watching the chef girl and the team work at the small place! Well done guys!

In business since 1907. Ever watch SNL skit: cheese burger, cheese burger, cheese burger. No Coke, just Pepsi. Well this is the real deal. People stand waiting for a seat at the counter, as there are no tables. Best burgers with fresh pickles, onion and cheese of wanted. A secret sauce to add or regular mustard and ketchup. No fries. And you will want more then one burger. Cheap cheap prices. Cheese Burger is 3 bucks. Friendly staff. All I can say... It's a must!

  • Gabriella D.

Simple cheeseburger with pickles, onion, and hot mustard. Not a lot of decisions to make. But the perfect backyard burger.

  • Jonathan K.

Simply the best Burgers in town. If your from out of town and don't mind the wait, it's worth the wait.

  • Mary J.

I absolutely loved everything about this place. When I visited my good friend who lives in CDA, she told me I HAD TO eat here during my visit. I love how straightforward the menu is. Not many choices and good prices. If you want a simple juicy cheeseburger without the frills definitely come here. If you want all the bells and whistles such as fries and a milkshake this is not the place for you. Come here before the lunch rush. I didn't have to wait at all when I came around 11:30 on a weekday. Make sure you have cash! Also if you're really hungry, order one burger at a time because they always ask if you want a second after finishing your first. These burgers are obviously best fresh off the grill.

  • Katie K.

Hands-down best burger ever! I am from Coeur d'Alene and every time I go back there I make a special trip just to go to Hudsons. Don't ask questions just go make sure you put the spicy mustard on there and have a slice of pie when you're done. You may have to wait in line, but it's worth it.

  • Levi M.

Great double cheese. Worth it. Amazing staff. So kind! Definitely glad we stopped in at this CDA staple!

  • Bradley B.

This place is hoppin. You can call ahead your order. Burgers are made fresh in front of you. Very tender burgers. Very tasty.

    (5)
  • Cult C.

Solid product. Customer service is good if you know their business model. If you are a first timer and don't order correctly, service is a bit condescending. This business once put McDonald's out of business on Sherman Ave. due to locals loyalty. That says a lot about the locals and Huddies reputation.

    (3)
  • Jeff A.

Fun place - takes you back in time. Very friendly. Gets a bit crowed but worth the wait.

    (5)
  • Yang X.

I didn't find anything special in their burgers, and they only accept cash.

  • Kathy K.

Best hamburgers in CDA...been coming here since the 80s....thx Hudson for being here...now move to AZ! Eric

    (5)
  • Philip M.

Double cheese burger with pickles & homemade spicy ketchup... Simple yet satisfying; That's the way I'd describe Hudson's. Small town stop that's worth it!

  • Matt G.

Can't go wrong with a good old fashioned Huddy's burger. A classic here in CDA for sure and it always hits the spot. The owners are super nice and the prices are fair. Sometimes the wait is a little long to get a seat at the bar area, but it's worth the wait. Can't recommend this place highly enough....if you haven't been already get up off your butt and GO!!

    (5)
  • lisa a.

The burger was just okay. Just a burger and onion slice and pickles on a room temperature bun. It was cooked on a flat top and done to medium well done. The hot mustard took over the flavor of the. Eat. The spicy ketchup was good. The best thing here is the men who work there. They could not have been any nicer if they tried. Not worth the hype.

    (3)
  • Jim P.

Love it. An American classic! Make sure you get the spicy ketchup. It's what a burger joint should be.

    (5)
  • Sarawr O.

One of those 'if you don't get it, you don't get it' places - part of Coeur d'Alene history. Cash only. Super affordable. Don't ask for extra stuff that's not listed. Get a bag full of burgers & go down the street to the lake to eat them after getting the spicy ketchup & mustard on them. Nice & soft burgers.

First, beware the size of the store itself. Many other restaurants on the main strip are ten times the size. We're literally talking 15 people maximim. Pros: simple, clean, hand-made. You pick a burger and onion and/or pickle. Gets formed in front of you and thrown on the grill. You add sauce - ketchup, mustard, spicy ketchup. Juicy burger with a cheap price. Cons: Tiny restaurant for a boardwalk that stays pretty busy. No sides - fries or anything. Buns are cheap, tasteless and brought down the overall quality of the burger. Does not take cards, but supplies an ATM in the back. The person who greeted us seemed impatient and didn't care to explain anything since we were new (ie, patty size, well done, how to order). They weren't busy, most the people were already eating or had finished. I'd come back, knowing what to expect now. But that bun still disappointed me. I was expecting a better quality for the hype. The meat itself was good and that's what's most important!

  • Eric H.

This has got to be the most overrated burger I have ever had. The lines are around the corner, to wait for the greasiest burger of all time. I don't even have enough time to finish this burger before my bun is soaked in grease. Within five minutes of eating here, I am immediately directed to the bathroom where my body rejects (anally) whatever I put into it. And another thing, no fries? NO FRIES?! Why. You can only order a grease burger, and pie. As if those even go together. The amount of people that go here is astonishing. Not even the best burger in a small northern Idaho town.

    (1)
  • Dan W.

I may be biased because I've been coming here 36 years but I've traveled all over the US and still haven't found a burger as simple and delicious as Hudsons. The homemade hot mustards and ketchups are a perfect compliment to great beef grilled in front of you. My only drawback in giving them a good review is that I may have to wait longer than the usual 5 minutes for a spot at the counter. Whatever, Its well worth it!

    (5)
  • Andrew W.

Finally tried the famous Hudson hamburger today. Got a double cheeseburger with onion, pickle, and spicy ketchup. The burger was very juicy and had a good flavor, but I'm not sure it was worth the 20-30 minute wait. Would go again if wait was shorter.

  • The Donut A.

The single greatest item i have eaten in my life. One could argue their burgers would be better with more ingredients, but i cant imagine enjoying them anymore. The workers are kind and personable and the atmosphere is family friendly and then some. If youre looking for a gross greasy burger, look elsewhere, because while Hudsons is a little greasy, that is just the perfect amount to bring out the flavor in their fresh meat. If i could make one complaint, it would be that they cook the food in front of you, making it feel like an eternity before you finally lay hands on that delectible sculpture of bread, meat, cheese, pickles, and onions. Tears of joy have fallen from my eyes just writing this.

    (5)
  • Cedric B.

A burger as god intended. Good old fashion dripping burger, nothing else needs to be said.

    (5)
  • Jennifer T.

Just a good greasy hamburger at a reasonable cost. Nothing fancy here. Just pickle, lettuce and tomato. Not even french fries BUT that's ok cuz the burger makes up for lack of em'. Heck have 2 burgers cuz they are so reasonable.

  • Travis S.

Yes, I'm from there, so there's some heavy nostalgia wrapped up in this. That being said, they're the best. The best at being simple. Too many places take the more is more approach. Simple cheeseburgers, limited toppings. Fresh and hit, and after waiting in line, you are very hungry. There's something communal about bellying up to the bar with tourists, locals, grandmas, teenagers, blue and white collate alike. Do your self a favor and stand in line if you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods.

  • Chelsea H.

So simple and so delicious. Hands down best burger I've ever had. Great buns, juicy burger, tangy hot sauce. We ordered to go and ate them by the lake. Great great great spot!

  • Marina H.

Everytime I come to CDA, I make it a priority to stop at Hudson's and get a burger. They've been here forever and it's no wonder- their burgers are delicious and so simple. Imagine the in-n-out of Idaho, except better. Locally owned, cheap and delicious. Don't miss it!

On our visit back to the Northwest from Berlin, we were just looking for a bite to eat in Coeur d'Alene. We were lucky enough to wander into this old-school burger joint with an exceedingly simple menu. Your options? BURGER. If you are really hungry - there is a double. Luckily - a burger is the only thing you need. We grabbed a seat at the counter and were immeaditly enveloped into this friendly neighborhood atmosphere of old-timers, regulars, and friendly staff. We watched in awe as they added the only toppings Hudson's approved: fresh sliced pickles, onions, american cheese plus three house sauces on offer. So how did it taste? Like America. We could have eating this for every meal on our trip back and been in heaven.

  • Arry Y.

Man-stablishment. Burger, or cheeseburger. NO: lettuce tomatoes mayonnaise mustard relish straws mushrooms fries avocado credit cards debit cards.... Pretty damn tasty though. If you want to avoid lines, best go during off-peak hours (i.e. get there before noon, or after 130pm). The guys working there are experiencing flow - you can tell they quite enjoy their jobs. It's pretty awesome to watch them work.

Maybe I'm biased from growing up fairly close by but, in my opinion, this is the best hamburger I have ever had. If i had to pick one place to eat Simple menu -- simple food -- amazing taste. Family owned and very friendly. You sit right at the counter. Expect a short wait but very worth it. Best burger in USA.

Delicious simple, classic burgers. Cheeseburger with onions and pickles. Gets busy, but it's worth the good quick bite.

I DO NOT GET IT..... lol Heard about this place being around for 100 years or so and that they are just "the best". I enjoy a good hamburger so made sure to make a stop while I was in town to give it a shot. Walked in at an off time of day when it wasn't too busy. Inside is a very small diner type setting which is understandable if they are trying to stay true to being a 100 year old establishment. Ordered a couple double cheeseburgers and a single for my daughter. Decided to go with the spicy ketchup since it was different and there I waited... .and waited... and waited. They prepare the food in view of you so it was interesting to me to see them pull a bun out of a plastic bag as if they just purchased it from the store. I also found it interesting that they pulled a chunk of hamburger from a plastic wrapped foam like package that you would typically purchase at a regular grocery store. So I began to question my decision to eat there but I have an open mind and know that seasoning, cooking techniques, and toppings can go a long way. I did notice they cut pickle slices off of a full sized pickle on the spot which is appearantly an amazing feat based on some other reviews I have read. Took my first bite and could taste the "spicy ketchep" which I really didn't care for all that much. Wasn't really spicy and sort of had that "I just threw up in my mouth a little tiny bit so I might as well just swallow it back down" taste. The burger itself had absolutely no flavor.... like no seasoning... like worse than anything I have ever cooked myself at home. Very boring. The bun was not toasted and really just absorbed the spicy ketchup to be a mushy mess. Sadly the best part of the burger was probably their hand sliced pickles... which taste like regular pickles... so nothing special there. A few other side notes.... they accept cash only... which didn't necessarily bother me other than our total came to something like $27.18 I happened to have some loose change on me so I gave her $30.23 (2 dimes and 3 pennies since I had it on me and don't like to carry change). Of course I did this expecting to get 1 nickel back... but instead she looked at me like I was crazy... pushed my 3 cents back to me and then gave me 2 more pennies. So I would suggest a cash only establishment teach their employees how to handle cash and do simple math. lol Just nit-picking a little on that one but funny to me since they are cash only. In conclusion.... if you want to say you choked down a crappy burger at a place that is over 100 years old and if you are fascinated by watching someone take a pickle and cut a few slices in front of you... this is the place for you. They don't offer fries and don't offer shakes which I feel is a little odd for a burger place. They say that it is their tradition... but after all I saw... I think it is more lazy than tradition. It is over-priced in my opinion and it seems that they are literally getting by on just their reputation alone... I am really at a loss for words on how this place has made it 100+ years. God Bless America that places like this can succeed.

Unseasoned hamburger patties served on "Walmart Great Value"-grade buns (Hudson's gets them from Franz, which is the same place Walmart buys theirs from) with institutional cheese food slices. You can do better at home if you have a cast-iron skillet to fry them in, or you grill them outdoors. There are four old-time burger joints in Coeur d'Alene: Hudson's, Roger's, Zip's and Paul Bunyan. Roger's has the best burgers, followed by Zip's, Hudson's and Paul Bunyan.

Pretty mediocre burger. Plain white bun, under seasoned patty and processed cheese. Also, what kind of burger place doesn't serve fries? Not sure what all the hype is about, but would definitely not come back.

  • Matthew W.

I've never understood why people from this town rave about Hudson's. I wasn't born here but I've lived in Cd'A for over 25 years. The burgers just aren't that good. They aren't bad but they aren't good either. Sometimes, talking to people who've spent their entire lives here about Hudson's, I almost feel like I'm intruding on some strange cult I'll never understand. Small, unremarkable patties with unmemorable buns and not much to speak of in the way of toppings. I really just don't get it. The only thing I can figure is it has something to do with nostalgia; I just don't understand being nostalgic over mediocrity.

This is a neat throwback burger joint right on the main drag of CDA. The food is nothing to write home about, but the spicy sauces are good. The burger cook is impressive, especially when slicing pickles and onions! Nice staff; very crowded (you can only sit at one of the maybe 20 barstools, so expect people to be standing right behind you in this tight space).

  • AS R.

The best hamburgers in the town, the state and probably the region. These are bare bones burgers cooked to perfection. Don't expect much of anything else either on the burger (onions, pickles, american cheese plus three house sauces are the ONLY toppings). They don't sell fries or shakes or pretty much anything else - burgers, soft drinks, ham n cheese and a great assortment of pies (which I did not try). I live in DC where gourmet burgers are all about crazy toppings like liver pâté and saffron mayo. This place is the antithesis. It serves its minimalist burgers a a great price and they are so good you won't need any yak cheese or strawberry jalapeño oleo to dress them up. The folks behind the counter were very friendly and made us feel like regulars on our very first visit.

If you were to open up another restaurant like this anywhere in the world today it would go down in flames real quick. Maybe I'm just hatin' cuz I dont like raw 1/2" white onions on my burger, inconsistant thin burger patty sizes, inconsistant cooking temps, just want a side of fries with a burger, and maybe a beer. They do however have great customer service but then again every food service person in Idaho is nice

Hudson's may be a legend in CDA, but after eating there for the second time in 10 years, I still don't get it. There may have been no condiments available in CDA when the restaurant opened in 1907, but what's the excuse in 2014? Waiting in line for a seat at a bar in a tiny place to pay $5.50 for a double cheeseburger with a marginal mass produced bun, pickle, and onions? Really? Don't waste your time or money.

    (2)
  • Dae Y.

i got the single burger with pickles and onions. and i was hungry enough to have another one. if i ever go back, them i will just get the double. really, really, really good. yes, it is a biased 5 star review, but when an institution has been around as long as this one, where the quality is great, and the purity of the product they offer is timeless and the staff seems to have achieved the illusive quality of 'flow', then how can you not give them five stars?? the test of time. it's a beyotch. and they have passed it brilliantly!!

  • Erica K.

This place is the best! The burgers are fantastic! We love the simplicity of Hudson's. I've been going for over 25 years, wouldn't change a thing!

    (5)
  • Gary J.

Something has changed at Hudson's, the magic is not quite what I remember. Is it the bun? The meat? Something has changed. Not sure what. Rule #1; do not mess with success! Still pretty good; but, on the Edge of going the other way maybe? We'll see.

So here's the deal: this place is over 100 years old and has been run for five fucking generations by the same family. The menu only has five or six items only but that's all you'll need. Prolly one of the best burgers I've had anywhere at any time that I didn't make myself. Oh: and there's no fries here. It's just cheap, awesome burgers.

Order: Two Cheeseburgers with both Burger Layout: Bun, Cheese, Burger, Onion, Pickle, Bun Cost: $4.80 Fries: Not happening Being in Coeur d'Alene for a very short time, I wasn't quite sure I was going to be able to try this place. I walked by it at night after it had closed and saw that it opened at 9:30 AM... and I left at 10:00 AM. Yes, burgers for breakfast. Not surprisingly, I was the first one in the place. I took a seat and was asked what I wanted. Given the menu selection of 4 items, I went with two cheeseburgers. The guy portioned some meat off a large chunk on a tray and formed two burgers in a couple seconds - plopped them on the grill that can fit about 16 burgers max, and let them start cooking. Next he brought out an onion and cut two whole slices off it, grabbed a couple pickles and sliced those up. He flipped the burger and added cheese... put it all together and next thing you know, they were sitting in front of me. Add spicy ketchup and mustard and enjoy. Essentially the same burger that people have been eating for 103 years now. Judging the place as a museum, it should easily receive 5 stars. Historic pictures line the walls, all sorts of things about the old boat races, a menu that has fought off change so well that they don't serve fries and have only succumbed to adding a double cheeseburger to the menu in the past 30 years. It's a fantastic place and I was delighted that I got to experience it. The burger by its own merits, was very standard. That's the way it's meant to be. The meat was perfectly cooked, the cheese melted, the veggies crisp. While nothing detracted from it, nothing made it phenomenal either. 4/5

  • Tyler W.

The burgers are great, the menu is simple, and the staff is friendly, especially given the hectic lunch crowd. Standing room only and a line out the door is made tolerable by the fact that everything is done efficiently but not rushed. There is nothing special about this place and that's what makes it special. The burger (with cheese and onion, no pickle for me) was cooked well and seasoned well and just has a classic, flat-top grill at a diner taste. No frills, but better for it.

Honest burger. When I am in Cd'A I always get Hudson's in.

My family was driving through Idaho on our way to Montana when we saw all these reviews to come here and try the hamburgers. I'm going to have to say, there is not much to say about this place besides that it's overrated. I will have to admit I did like the beef that they used, it's different than your usual fast food burger. But other than that, I felt it was overpriced for what I was getting.

If any humble foodservice operation deserves our worship, this one has to be it. My ladyfriend and I drove 325.7 miles for her first visit to Hudson's--and we visited again the next day. We are not the first party to have done this! These folks have been doing delicious burgers--properly--for almost 107 years now. They have blessedly kept demand well ahead of supply. They form and cook your burgers to order, turning once and adding cheese on request. You can clearly see their skill and their honesty. You cannot drive through. You will not be numbered. No one will shout at you. The best part might be the total absence of exotic toppings for you to ruin your burger with... Simplicity is the order of the day, just as it was for the previous century. I don't believe it's possible to find a better burger anywhere. And I've tried. I really have. Please consider the tragic alternatives, get yourself to Coeur d'Alene and tuck in! They are truly great people and they take excellent care of us. At my first opportunity, I'll be back at that counter--and loving every single second of it.

It's a Coeur D'Alene institution and much like dising In-N-Out you will be considered a heretic and outcast if you do. The bottom line is you get a very cheap pedestrian burger that is cooked on griddle and served with a cheap bun and very basic accompaniments, most people liberally apply the so-called hot mustard and spicy ketchup (neither of them are) since there isn't much flavor and then extol how great it is. Go for Nostalgia Go for the prices Go for the burger and pie concept But don't go for a good burger because simply put it's not here, you are getting an experience and a full stomach cheaply but certainly not a culinary delight. 2.5 stars rounded up so I don't get hate mail.

Authentic old school burgers served at the counter--as good as burgers get!! I like to order mine with half or no bun for a lower carb option.

I've had burgers from all over the country and honestly, I don't know what it is about this place... but its incredible. Every time I visit the grandparents its a MUST have to go stop by. I usually by at least 3 at a time haha. Definitely a must try! Judge for yourself!

Naysayers beware, I don't take kindly to your types. I've had many years enjoying Wendy's over Mcdonalds, I've lived in CA (Home of In-N-Out) for 7 years. I've had restaurant burgers, I've had custom built burgers with unique sauces (pesto being my favorite), I've had grilled burgers and stovetop burgers. Frozen or fresh, seasoned or not, charcoal or gas, with all the toppings I could ask for or just flat plain, ask me which is the best burger I've had--- Hudson's. Luckily I have friends in CDA, and I love the town anyway, or I might have to shamefully say I'd drive 14 hours up there just for a burger. I will grant just one thing... Steve makes the best of the burgers, I'm not always satisfied with the other grillmen, but I've never been disappointed with Steve at the helm. It's not just the taste of the burger, you might well find one that tastes better... it's the texture, the thickness, how long it's on the grill, and how easily it goes down. When I lived back in CDA in 2004 I could slide two doubles down and still skip out of there. Sadly, I can usually pull off a burger and a half tops nowadays when I visit. Combine up that juicy, perfectly cooked burger with some of their hot ketchup (it's not jalapeno spicy, it's really just spiced) and you have a match made in heaven. I don't go for the hot mustard, but I will talk about the hot ketchup. Like I said, not spicy spicy and there's little chance it'll burn your tongue. There have been days where It's been more watery, there have been days when it is of perfect thickness. I always use quite a bit. At its best, it's cleared my sinuses, at its worst it has little to no pungency. More often than not it's been of good consistancy. I add cheese. I don't think there's anything special about their cheese, but I like it. Atmosphere-wise. If you don't want a crowd, you'll have to go in the winter or late in the day summer. Winter you'll pretty regularly walk in and sit down, summer-good luck. The people are friendly and funny (if you tell them it's your first time there and order something other than a burger, you'll get quite a reaction), if you eat there often enough you'll know them all by name.

Ok, we've waited a long time to try Hudson's, everyone we know locally raves about the Huddy Burger. Ummm...am I missing something? Stand in line for an hour for a blah burger without lettuce or tomato (not an option) and sit at a cramped counter where no one speaks and there is absolutely no fun or atmosphere to be had (except for the picture gallery on the walls). Beyond the total lack of flavor (except for the thick slice of burning RAW white onion), the fact that a big tub of raw meat is sitting on the counter un-refrigerated as flies are landing on it, and workers are then pulling handfuls out of the tub to make patties, is a deal breaker. Disgusting. I'm sorry, I've had much better burgers at big franchise stores like In-n-Out, or Five Guys. And...this place is all CASH, no credit cards. Really Coeur d' Alene set the bar a little higher.

I had wanted to eat at Hudson's for...years. But every single time I tried it was closed or something or other. Finally, FINALLY, I went. The burger was seriously, seriously good. They don't have fries (we hit up Zips down the street-- a burger without fries? Crying shame!) but the burger speaks for itself. As my husband described it: It's a great 'snack' --ha. So good, though. And you have to go for the sake of it being such a staple CDA institution!

I went here for lunch when I was visiting Coeur D'Alene. I heard this place has the best hamburgers in town. I don't understand why everyone told me these burgers are the best. They aren't bad and their meat tastes fresh, but it tastes normal, the portions are small and you will probably have to eat a few to get full. I think the best part of the burger was the pickle. Everything else just seemed like a normal burger. They have 4 things on the menu: hamburger, cheese burger, pie and a ham/egg sandwich (breakfast only), which isn't much of a selection. I do like the decor of the restaurant and it feels like an old style-long counter restaurant. Overall, this place isn't bad, but I don't see what's so great about their burgers.

    (3)
  • Amy A.

Confused by the high rating???? Ok, maybe they don't use pre made beef patties but seriously? It was a wimpy burger, almost tasted like McDonalds... Maybe it's their store bought, crappy buns...? A good quick fix, cheap burger if you're visiting the area, otherwise there are MUCH better places to go.

A Coeur d'Alene institution since 1907, right in the middle of downtown. Really nice staff and a tasty burger! Cheap too and there is usually a wait to get a seat. Menu is very simple, on top of their awesome hamburgers, they also feature pie. Will be going back here for sure on my next visit.

I get the diner appeal of Hudson's, I really do. There's a certain charm to the old-fashioned, classic American burger joint that doesn't serve fries, offer varied burger toppings, or even hand out straws just because that's how they've always done it. There's no point in complaining about those aspects of Hudson's. But if you're looking for the unforgettable diner experience based on the quality of the food, don't look here. The burgers simply aren't memorable. They're plain, unseasoned burgers. You may have heard, like I had, about the mysteriously fantastic flavor of the beef they use. I have a feeling these diners want to believe in this mythical meaty-goodness because they think a long-standing joint like Hudson's should have amazing food. The problem is, it just doesn't. I walked away remembering the cheap bun more than I did the burger. And don't warn me about the "spicy ketchup" and the "hot mustard" when they are neither spicy nor hot. Furthermore, both sauces were so thin and watery that they slid off the burger the moment I picked it up. If you want the experience of eating a slice of pie at a counter, or you want lunch for $3, Hudson's is great. Just don't expect to be dazzled by the food.

Been a while since I've been "home" to North Idaho (lived there 27 years) and as usual was attracted as if on auto pilot (like a swallow to Capistrano) to Hudson's. We were a party of 8 so it took a while to get us all seated. Some of the locals eyed me with the suspicion of a "Tourista" until I ordered a double burger "Center OUT" (half the bun) to which they asked "What the Hell is THAT??" You can take the boy out of North Idaho but you can't take the North Idaho out of the boy!! I was shoving Hudson's burgers down the gullet while you were in the back of Mom & Dad's Winnebago on your first trip up from California SON!! STILL one of the best burgers around, and the sauces never change. Makes my tongue tingle at the thought of them.. I wonder which will give out first?? The ancient grill, or the divoted cutting board where they slice the pickles. My young charge, my daughter's boyfriend and a first timer, didn't dissapoint me and after the first double cheeseburger, kept alive a family tradition and ordered a second round. Unfortunately, at 62 I must practice moderation although my tastebuds whistled and hooted for more.. However, we went again the next day... Need I say more? Long LIVE Hudson's Hamburgers... A tradition in CdA!! Trivia question: What vaunted National burger chain foolishly opened a restaurant a couple of doors down from Hudsons only to shutter it a few months later??? (McDonalds)

Honestly, I don't get the hype. I hear more people rave about Hudson's and honestly, I just don't get it. It's not bad, just nothing that makes me want to go there. And, if company is visiting, despite the many "don't forget to take them to Hudson's" comments I have an entire list of restaurants I'd rather them remember the area for. You can do better but if you insist on seeing what all the hype go for it.

We drove a long way to Hudson's for my first visit and I'm so glad we did. It was the best hamburger I've ever had. I loved it so much we went back the next day for another before heading back home. I loved sitting at the counter watching them cooked my burger from scratch. The menu is simple which is great. There's no need for excessive toppings and condiments. The quality and fresh ingredients make for an excellent burger. The staff is very friendly, attentive and service was fast. Everyone needs to experience Hudson's at least once in their life time no matter the distance. It's well worth it. We will be back soon.

These burgers were hyped up quite a bit by friends. Since my little boy and I fancy ourselves to be quite the burger connoisseurs we had to give these a try. So we did. Twice. We were quite happy both times (although the wait is long, it is also worth it). Between the two sauce options I preferred the red. Be aware it's a cash only operation.

To hear the locals tell it this place end all be all for eating options. It's overflowing with hype and, frankly, I just don't get it. The food is just fine, there's nothing really wrong with it but I see no reason to run around telling people they absolutely MUST go here. If you do go you won't dislike the food but you will dislike that, contrary to local hype, it's nothing special.

Hudson's is the TAO of Hamburgers. The burgers are plain, simple and unassuming... and by their virtuousness the hamburgers are truly great. This place makes hamburgers - That's it - and they do it better than anyone - anywhere. Burgers are not supposed to be busting with exotic flavors or be culinary master pieces...a hamburger is a basic American staple. The perfection with Hudson's is it is a traditional hamburger and has that flavor that only a REAL hamburger has. A real beef flavor. Fresh and hand- made burger. The hamburger patty is the right size and it is cooked just right - super juicy. I always get the pickles and onions. It is cooked fresh, it is always consistent, it is cheap, it is cooked fast. Hudson's has a perfect Hamburger with its ever so subtle unassuming ensemble of hamburger, buns, pickles onions, and choice of hot mustard and hot ketchup. The History and tradition that escapes everywhere else has been preserved here and that does add to the experience. Also, I think I have a little crush on the girl working there, but that did not affect my review. In keeping with the TAO of Hamburgers (loosely translated); The unwise do no not like Hudson's, but if such ones did not like it, Hudson's would not be Hudson's.

Seriously overrated. After reading the reviews, I greatly looked forward to the time that I would find myself in Coeur D'Alene, able to try one of these delicious Hudson's burgers that I had heard so much about. Well, that day came. Unfortunately, there is nothing special about these burgers. They are just normal, unseasoned ground beef on a very cheap bun with onions and pickles. For $5 (the cost of a double cheese), I could get a much better tasting burger at any major fast food chain. I think that the people who give this place glowing reviews have lived in CDA their entire lives and have fond memories of this place from childhood. There is NOTHING special about these burgers. They taste like something you would get in a cafeteria. The service is amazing, though.

My fiancé and I go here once a week even when we are tight on cash. The servers are as amazing as the food and you can't find a place in CDA with more history.

This little Coeur d'Alene institution hasn't made the pages of the USA Today or The Wall Street Journal for simply serving up "pedestrian" burgers as some would say. Simply put, these are some the very BEST burgers in the country... Period! Always fresh ingredients and the best beef. The burgers are so moist and juicy that the juice literally drips off the burger and onto your plate.

If you think this is the best burger you have ever eaten, then you need to get out more! :) This place is great for filling a void in your stomach, but the burgers are plain meat grilled on a flat top right in front of you, store bought buns, you can add cheese, onion or pickle and thats it. They arent big , so more than one will be a must . Some say these burgers are so juicy...ah yeah ...juicy from all the grease pouring straight out of em. Its pretty easy to eat two doubles, which roll in around $4 each. They have a few different sauces they mix up to put on burgers and for sides you can eat pie. thats right, no fries, chips...nothing. Its a cash only establishment and they close very early at 6pm. Its super small inside and in summer its a wait everytime . Good luck getting a seat. Its a 100 yr old tradition in C'da to eat here, and thats fine for the locals or those taken there when they were a small kid but my wife can make the same exact burger at home with a few more trimmings and a bit more favor so I will only eat at Hudsons when no line and when the wife is unavailable to cook up some raw meat for me! The people that work at Hudsons are GREAT By the way and really make a visit more enjoyable, assumming once again that you can find a seat. Winter months are much slower and a good time to give this place a visit. Writing this made me want to drive the 160 miles to Missoula for a Fuddruckers 1 lb burger!! Now thats a burger!!

Good burger with good pie. Unfortunately that's about all that's on the menu. The place is very small (only seats about 12-14) and only has counter seating so they really can't accommodate many more menu items. I wouldn't want to try going there in season. Staff is very friendly and helpful with local recommendations. We'd definitely go back.

You all don't need me to tell you how amazing Hudson's is because you know it. Double cheeseburger with raw onions and pickles that create a groove in the cutting board (that changes every 8 months), fresh meat with each patty made to order, horseradish sauce that goes on to make the burger perfect, tradition, excellence, and a piece of homemade pie to top off the meal. Its worth the wait, we all know. What you don't know is that I once drove 3 hours (each way) in early December just to have one of these hamburgers. YES. They. are. that. good. I'm from SF and I'm picky about food. I can tell you I've never done that for any other restaurant. Hudsons=burgers, burgers=Hudsons. I'm not even sure In-n-Out can top it. Dammit now I made myself want to hope on a plane just to have a hamburger. Maybe I'll set a new "traveling for food" record.

I like the fixings on my burgers normally, but these burgers were of such high quality, I didn't miss the extras. No frills menu, which could be a let down, but the burger was great. CASH ONLY = boooo!

Ask any Hudson's regular. No one even slightly notices the absence of fries, frou-frou side salads or bizarre burger toppings. In fact, mention any of these things inside the place, and you're libel to be on the blunt end of a few stone cold death glares. Why distract from perfection? In fact, cheese has only been allowed since the 1960's. A Huddy burger is uncomplicated, iconic, handed down like a symbol of local pride from generation to generation since 1907. It comes in four varieties; single, double, single with cheese and double with cheese. Onion and pickles are the only garnish options, sliced fresh per order right there at the grill. Hudson's trademark spicy ketchup and mustard should be applied in generous doses, and a fountain Pepsi in a tiny glass is the only way to chase it down. Homemade pie is displayed in the mini-cooler and is probably incredible, but I've never had room for dessert. For oddballs inexplicably uninterested in America's best burger, there are the options of ham, egg, or ham and egg sandwiches. But why? Also, Hudson's is possibly the last place on Earth where one can order a nice, thick glass of buttermilk. But why? Read the full review at getoutnorthidaho.com

Pros: - fresh ingredients -cooking in full view of customers, just a couple feet away - very cheap prices. Great Value! -go with a local that has fond memories of going there with their dad when they were young and you may get some good stories. Cons: -Long line. We waited 25 minutes to order and then another 20 minutes for the food to cook -Very limited seating, we ended up walking to the public park near the beach. -No fries -Basic ground beef burger. No seasoning other than a little bit of salt. The meat tasted so plain that I'm starting to realize I've become a burger snob. -"Spicy ketchup" tasted like dijon musturd. I was hoping for something with heat, like a hot salsa, instead of dijon type taste. But it covered the plain patty taste. Bottom line: I'm rooting for these guys. Unlike the corporate chain restaurants, it is great to see a small family business that uses fresh, real food. Maybe they'll read this and add a basic bbq sauce or something to dress up the flavor.

This is a small counter only restaurant that specializes in hamburgers. It was busy and deservedly so. Their hamburgers are as fresh as I have seen, simple and tasty. Apparently opened 100 years ago the tradition of serving a great burger continues. Sit at the counter order a cheese burger and one is immediately made and delivered within minutes on a single plate. I had one but noticed others, after eating one, simply ordered another. As reviewed here before there are no fries but there is pie. I also had some pie and it was good.

As a North Idaho native I have eaten at Hudsons several times over the years. I have never been impressed. I had some friends from out of town visit and they wanted badly to try "huddys". They were unimpressed as was I once again. You can make better burgers at home on square wonder bread. If you looking for a good burger downtown go to Scruds or Moontime.

Whoa Nelly! Am I glad I stopped in here! I was a first-timer to CDA who had inexplicably forgotten to consult Yelp before heading out for lunch, so I feel especially lucky to have stumbled upon Hudson's. A tiny lunch counter with tens of people standing around waiting to belly up is always a good sign though. Sure enough, Hudson's serves up fresh, delicious, and delightfully simple burgers which are so good you will not even notice that they do not serve fries. Why would you want to designate stomach space for fries when you can have another burger on demand instead? You should, however, take notice that they only accept cash. Don't lose your spot at the counter to run to the ATM like me!

Hand-made patties served hot-off-the-grill with pickles, onion and sauce. Yum!! Simple and delicious. Really, that's it. Service is hit or miss. Sometime they are friendly and sometimes a tad standoff-ish. They are very busy though -- there is nearly always a line for the few seats at the counter. I agree with another reviewer who said "you have to go here at least once on any trip to Cd'A." I'll be through in December and will definitely be stopping in.

Excellent little burger spot in Coeur d'Alene. There aren't many options here (only toppings are cheese, pickles, and onions) but the burgers are very good. Ate here both days I was in Idaho and will definitely stop here again next time I'm in the area. Highly recommended!

One of the best burgers! After years and years of research on the subject of burgers I have to say this place is in my top three favorites. The hand formed patties are made thin and cooked on a grill top that quickly sears the outside patty trapping the juices inside. The buns are simple grocery store quality but maybe that leads to part of the nostalgia. There are a very few options and even a lingo that goes along with ordering. The options are limited to hamburger or cheese burger, single or double, and your choice of plain, or with raw sliced onions or sliced pickles. There are 3 squeeze bottles on the counter with your choice of ketchup, mustard or a secret blend that is similar to a spicy mustard. If you are in CDA or even within 30 miles you should definately check them out. My brother drives over twice a year from Seattle just to eat at Hudson's.

Imagine if you were at a bar, but instead of ordering another round of shots, you keep getting offered hamburgers! OMG, hit me! It is such a cool place and it is not pretentious at all. It has been around forever! The decor and seating are a little unfortunate, but it sort of adds to the charm. I think you have to go here at least once on any trip to CDA.

Having had my first "Huddy Burger" some 42 years ago, i reckon it is time for me to finally spread the good word on this joint. Several generations of Hudson's have been slinging high quality, simple burgers and bringing a community together since 1907. This is one lunch counter that must be experienced!

We drove from Seattle to Glacier Park but missed Hudson's on the trip out as the timing just wasn't right. We thought about those burgers for a week before finding ourselves on line this afternoon. The place reminds me of a SNL skit - cheeseburger, cheeseburger, but NO chips, NO fries, NO shakes, nuthin but burgers and soda. The burgers are really good and should not be missed and you should not be intimidated by a line, it moves fast. There are pies, but we did not sample them. Are pickles a vegetable? And when you're finished, the server comes over and asks if you want another!

Hudson's is a very small place, serving just burgers and pie. There is something really great about a little place that never changes, turns out a good product, clean and nice people. Is the best burgers you've ever had? Probably not, but a great price and fun to eat in a place the community values. I hope they are there in another hundred years.

A restaurant is so much more than just the food (although the food should be the main event) and Hudson's is undoubtedly a fun place to come. Something about the simplicity of the menu, the bare bones decor, the wait for a seat at the counter. It's sort of old school and I love that. The hamburger itself was good, but honestly it wasn't the greatest hamburger I've ever had. I prefer a medium to medium-rare burger and they really cooked it through (as does every burger place I've visited in Idaho - e coli scare much?). But even without being cooked the way I like, the meat itself was a little bland - the texture and juiciness just weren't there for me. And, I get having a pared down menu and a simple assembly line set up, but the options of grilled rather than raw onions, lettuce and tomato would not have gone amiss. That's personal preference, though. If all you want is raw onion, American cheese and/or pickle on your burger, then this is the place for you. Definitely, for the price (less than $5 for a burger and drink) it was worth it and a million times better than any fast food joint. But if you're comparing it to, say, the iconic Apple Pan in Culver City (which also has an extremely limited menu of burgers and pie) to me they're simply in a different league. When I lived in L.A., I had to go to Apple Pan on a semi-regular basis to get my fix. I feel no similar urge to Hudson's. Vegetarians, beware: there's nothing for you here. Unless you just want a piece of pie!

I told a friend of mine that I would be passing through Coeur D'Alene on the way to NY and I asked him what I should do with my short amount of time in ID, and without hesitation he told me to go to Hudson's. I'm glad I made the time to go because this is one tasty burger. I got the double cheese and got to watch the guy make it right in front me. The guy does everything right in front of you, EVERYTHING. He takes the ground beef, portions and shapes it, grabs pickles and onions and slices them, pretty impressive. They also have specialty hot ketchup and mustard, it was interesting, nothing to really rave about, I'm pretty sure they just blend everything with dijon. The only down side is that it's a very small menu, they have breakfast sandwiches and stuff, but only two types of burgers: single and double. And no fries, but whatever, as long as that burger is there, s'all good in the hood. They also have a variety of pies (chocolate, banana, lemon meringue), not sure if they're made fresh, but they look d-lish!

i never thought i'd end up in coeur d'alene, idaho, of all places, but a vacation to montana had me in proximity. i was wandering around with a friend of mine before catching a flight over in spokane and it was the first place we saw, amidst a crowd of touristy restaurants with high prices. go to hudson's for the nostalgia factor. it's a no-frills hamburger joint with counter service. the menu looks unchanged from its time on the cart (or as a shack), with a few exceptions due to the chilled pies. it was the first time in my life that i've ever seen "buttermilk" on a drink menu and they didn't skimp on the pickles. the people on here explaining their disappointment with the restaurant and the hype they believe it gets are missing the point. people aren't coming here for the best burger of their life, and you can tell when you walk in the door you ain't getting one. the point is the americana factor, the family business, the simplified menu, the pause in time. and jesus christ was it a breath of fresh air from the rest of coeur d'alene.

Small mom and pop joints are always the best, and this one is no different. The place was small and only had about 15 counter seats but don't let that deter you at all. The menu was small, but in my opinion that's great. Pick a few things to make and do it great, and they have. They serve burgers and pie and drinks, that's about it. I got a double cheeseburger with everything and the veg was cut to order for every burger. Fresh onion and pickle are always great. The meat had a great flavor, and the sauce they put on it was mustard and a spicey katchup was amazing. The bun was soft and held up to the sandwich. I would definitely come back to this place next time in town. Great burger!

  • Bill E.

I don't seek out burgers, not anymore. Too many places have gotten carried away with them and put too much shit on them, destroying the simplicity. Not here. They have a big pile of ground meat and each burger as hand pressed as you order. Not made with some silly perfectly round cookie cutter, but by HAND. Kickin' it old school, love it. Burger, lettuce, onion. Done... and affordable!

I have loved Hudson's since I was a kid!! Stopped in yesterday after having not been in a few years and... as always... amazing! Definitely the best burger in town. Before reading further into this review, answer the question below, and direct yourself to the proper review. To you, the perfect fast hamburger is: A) A nice greasy slider from White Castle or a simple double cheeseburger from Wendys or B) calling ahead for a cheap take-out burger from Applebee's or similar chain restaurant... If you answered A... Hudson's Hamburgers is absolutely the greatest hamburger joint in the world! They've been doing it the good old fashioned way here for over 100 years. All they have, or need, is 17 stools in front of a long counter top in front of a small griddle blasting away hamburgers. Don't even bother with the menu. All you'll find is a single, double, cheese or no cheese, and the choice of pickles and/or onions. And if you want the latter, they actually pull out a dill pickle and raw onion to slice right then and there. In fact, the counter they slice on has a giant divot where they've been doing it for decades. The sauces are similarly simple but unique. A house recipe for spicy ketchup and spicy mustard accompany normal ketchup. There is perfection in simplicity here. The burger is fresh ground meet from a tub next to the griddle. The cook smashes the beef flat and the beef picks up the grease from the countless patties that have met their maker in the previous hours. It's like a White Castle slider but so much bigger, and so much better. I'd eat here everyday if I could. If you answered B... Hudson's is a unique hamburger joint that's been doing things the old fashioned way for 100 years, but it's just not my kind of burger. We'll start with the high points. The wait staff is friendly. The beef is fresh. The onions and pickles (the only toppings offered) are sliced before your eyes. The condiments - spicy varieties of mustard and ketchup - are of a secret recipe handed down 5 generations. But I just don't like my beef smashed below 1/4 inch thick when cooked. The burgers are like White Castle sliders but better, but I never eat at White Castle. When I want a burger, I want it 3-dimensional with at least 1 to 2 inches of height in the middle, which should be slightly pink. Also, enjoying the juices redistributed throughout the patty from the beef is way different than sharing the juices from 1000 hamburgers that have come before. There's nothing wrong with simplicity. Done correctly, a burger needs nothing more than a bun, some pepper and maybe a slice of cheese and thin layer of condiment. But please don't smash my burger!

Yes you see a 5 star review... Somehow Hudson's never ever ceases to amaze. They make one of the most simple burgers, and you will take one bite and realize you will not soon forget it. It definitely has the hole in the wall thing going for it too. It has been way too long since I have been down there now, but I am now craving it. Those who criticize clearly have the tasting ability of sandpaper. I think some people forget that burgers can be simple and perfect all at once.... if you don't agree go fry your burger in bacon grease and processed cheese, I am sure you will enjoy it. Until next review- Stay Classy :)

Oh my God, what doesn't Hudson's serve? I mean, you can get a hamburger with onions and pickles, or with pickles and cheese, or with just onions and cheese, or with no cheese no onions and no pickles. You can have double burger with pickles, or a double burger with onions and cheese, or a single burger with onions and no cheese. I could go on and on, because the options of what you can or can't have at Hudson's are endless, especially the can't have list, that's like infinite? Bring cash.

At first I thought "burgers with no fries???" After eating here, I thought, why would I want to fill up on fries, I'll just have another burger! So good. And so simple. Hamburger, made into a patty, onto the griddle, slice of onion, slices of pickles, dip the bun in the "juice" and make the burger. Heaven. I would move to Idaho just for these burgers.

Closed on a Thursday at 6pm, on the main strip of a resort town, in the middle of summer?!?! We didn't notice the closed sign because the place was packed. Upon entering with my family we were greeted with an annoyed "Did you call ahead?, No?, I'm sorry we're closed." Wow.

A CDA institution that completely lives up to the hype. Tasty good, greasy, basic burgers, prepared before your very eyes by 3rd generation owner/operator/cooks. Get your cheeseburger, then order your next one. Go early or be prepared to wait in line for a place at the counter, which is totally worth it just to watch the pickle slicing skills in action. No fries, but believe me, you can live without them.

Come here during a non-busy lunch time (11am, or 1:30pm or later) and sit at the barstools! The burgers are incredibly lean and tasty, the prices are perfect (cheap!), the service is awesome, and the sodas are often refilled.

  • Katy D.

Maybe not the best burger you will ever eat, but still delicious and absolutely worth stopping for. Hudson's is standing room only and always crowded with locals. No fries, but they do serve amazing huckleberry pie straight from the local mountains. The staff is always friendly and never has to write down your order. The same family has kept the business running for over 100 years and it's become an integral part of the local history.

Like every other burger place I've tried in the Pacific Northwest, I don't get the hype at all. I had heard from locals, and from Yelp reviews, that these burgers were supposed to be "the best." Instead I get something on par with Wendy's and certainly not as good as even Fatburger. The burger was cooked right (not packed), but average flavor, and it came with ketchup on it by default - my first sign something was amiss. Granted, this is the Pacific Northwest and I realize for this area of the country this is a good burger. I won't deny that. But for anyone from any other part of the country and have had a decent tasting burger, you will be sorely disappointed. Do what we did and try the deli down the street. Or Paul Bunyan's. Burgers are about the same, but at least you can get onion rings and a shake at Paul Bunyan's. I'll also give credit that at least this burger was edible, unlike other places I've been recommended for burgers.

    (3)
  • Chris T.

I don't see what all of the hype is about. The meat is just plain ground beef, no seasoning or anything. Then they just put pickles on it and call it good. You better add some of there sauce to get any flavor at all. I guess they are old fashion, but I prefer a burger with flavor.

This place is quite different, if you want a burger and a soda, your at the right place after 11. Before 11 they serve breakfast. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and ordered 6 burgers and the wait was 30 minutes. It was worth the wait, the burgers were very good, they only come with pickles and onions on them. I will return and I learned a tip, call in your order and you don't have to deal with the crowd.

When I moved to town, I went to the Northern Lights brewery for some local beer and it was here that someone told me, if I would be living in CDA, I must check out Hudson's. I'm glad I listened. The burgers are fresh and amazing, served in a cozy, tiny, belly-up-to-the-counter atmosphere. The only drawback, only in my companions opininion, was no side options. Hey, I totally respect doing a few thing and doing them right...for Hudson's, who needs fries? Not I!

If you want a burger, cheese burger, soda and pie, then Hudsons is the place in CDA. They keep it simple and serve it with a smile. Hudsons is an institution in Coeur d'Alene and you will be lucky to find a seat in the summertime. However, it is well worth the wait. The burgers are hand pressed and the onions are fresh. If you do not like your onions that strong then ask for them grilled. Of course the pie is great as well. Well worth stopping when you are downtown.

Been coming here since I was a kid. Best burgers ever. I'll be in town later this week and my mouth is already watering. Simple and easy. Double cheese pickle please.

Unfortunately just got back to Hudsons after 15 year hiatus (moved). Has not changed a bit! Service was excellent, and the burgers are phenominal! Just sorry I can't eat 3 or 4 burgers like I did years ago at a sitting. Way to go Hudsons!

Simply delicious! Quite possibly one of the best burgers ever. It's worth the wait for one of the just 17 chrome stools at the formica counter. Hudsons is a Cda tradition for almost 100 years. That should really say it all. The menu is short and steady yourself - there are no fries, but ask any local and they don't care about that because at Hudsons it's all about the burger and then about the pie. The secret - the owners says its the beef supplier but after 100 years the Hudson family knows a thing or two about how to cook a burger.

Simplicity is the secret here. I imagine that a lot of people who come in and look at the small menu are disappointed that they can't get a bacon mushroom western hickory burger and a supersized portion of fries, but that's the beauty behind Hudson's....just the basics, prepared and served perfectly.
